100-song playlist: Tinashe, Canyon, The Rolling Stones, more

And 10 blurbs about bluesy space-rock, kinetic ambient, the one Adéla song I like, and more.

100-song playlist: Tinashe, Canyon, The Rolling Stones, more

Chasing Sundays is proud to present: another "Shit I Like" playlist. I've been making 100-song playlists of new-to-me songs I enjoy since 2016, and this is my 36th installment in that series, bearing the title "Shit I Like 36.0." It contains 100 songs spanning a multitude of genres and eras that are bound together based on a very simple criteria: I like them, and before they were added to this playlist, I either hadn't heard them or hadn't realized I liked them.

Like all prior iterations of this series, "Shit I like 36.0" is not sequenced in any rational order. It's intended to be shuffled through and blindly explored like a messy crate of records in the back of a thrift store. Mixtapes are cool, but I also think there's value in thumbing through a big jumble of bangers and stumbling into something you never thought you'd hear.

To get you started, I plucked out 10 songs from "Shit I Like 36.0" and wrote about them below. It wasn't until after I'd selected these standouts that I realized I've never formally written about any of these artists on Chasing Sundays before, which made this a fun exercise. I did the same type of write-up for my previous five "Shit I Like" playlists, which you can read here, here, here, here, and here.

The first blurb of this article is free for all, but the next nine are behind the paywall along with the actual playlist on Spotify and Apple Music. I've also updated my "Shit I Like Masterlist," a jumbo playlist that compiles all 3,600 songs I've ever included in a "Shit I Like" (give or take a few that are no longer on streaming). I publish these playlists for Chasing Sundays subscribers a few times a year, and I'll be publishing other playlists more regularly as my site's output ramps up. Don't miss out.

Canyon - "Alarm"

"Alarm" might be the best song Jonah Paz has ever made. At least as far as pop songs go, the ear member has never strummed a guitar so congenially or committed to a generous melody for this long. He and Yaelle Avtan consider hooks to be a source of "greed" while composing ear's ascetic pop sacrifices, but in Canyon, Paz's two-song output with the Avtan-esque singer Briege Riley, he lets himself live a little. The lyrics remind me of Trick-era Alex G in how they zoom in on the particulars of a dramatic night: "The sound of an alarm," Paz murmurs, with Riley joining in on the next line. "Talk to you to find out how you are." It's just enough detail to fill in the cracks with my own blurry memories of dorm-room paranoia, and oh so tunefully benevolent.
